Pregnant? Early symptoms and signs of pregnancy

Wondering if you are pregnant?

Many believe that they "knew" that they were pregnant before the pregnancy test showed results.

And of course there are signs of pregnancy that can come early, even before you have done a pregnancy test, says Kristina Gemzell Danielsson , chief physician at Karolinska University Hospital and professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Karolinska Institutet, Solna:

- It is usually the classic: nausea, that you feel smells and tastes differently, that you have sore breasts, feel tired…, she says.

- Some may also feel that "Now menstruation is underway", and it will not - it can also be an early pregnancy symptom. But not everyone experiences these symptoms.

How early can symptoms of pregnancy be experienced?

Theoretically, you can get pregnancy symptoms when a highly sensitive pregnancy test can show positive, ie at the earliest from about ten days before menstruation, says Kristina Gemzell Danielsson.

- But there are huge variations on when you feel something and what you feel - and many feel nothing at all.

Jane Fogelström, midwife.

According to midwife Jane Fogelström , about half of the pregnant women she met at the beginning of the pregnancy, approximately in pregnancy week 5 or 6, experienced early signs of pregnancy.

- The other half say that they have not noticed anything at all, or almost nothing - until you ask: You have not been sensitive in the breasts? Or felt that it pulls a little in the stomach? Or do you think that things you usually like have started to smell a little strange? Then many people think that they recognize at least some of the pregnancy symptoms, she says.

Symptoms that MAY be a sign that you are pregnant

Here are some early pregnancy signs and symptoms that CAN indicate pregnancy, based on experiences from midwives, doctors, and Readers' readers (but  remember that they are not conclusive proof of pregnancy):

Very tense, or sore and swollen, breasts

Pain in the nipples, in a way that you have not had before, or sensitive in the nipples, in a way that you have not been before.

A feeling that it "pulls" a little in the groin.

Taste changes - food and drink may suddenly taste different, some may, for example, taste metallic in the mouth.

 Very motion sickness.

Increased flows, or different flows than otherwise.

Sensitivity to odors - things you have previously liked, such as coffee, can suddenly smell bad. Even the smell of the partner can be perceived as disgusting, and the smell of onions, garlic or charcuterie in a store can cause nausea.

Menstrual cramps without menstruation - sometimes "menstrual cramps" for several days without menstruation.

 Swollen and gassy stomach.

A strong, almost paralyzing fatigue, especially in the afternoons and evenings.

Mood swings - some may experience strong emotional fluctuations and may scold people in the environment in a way they do not usually do.

 Nausea, perhaps vomiting.

Strong hunger that makes you want to eat now, immediately, or that it feels like you constantly need to snack.

 Pain in the groin.

 Dizziness.

Need to kiss more often than otherwise.

Can you feel when you get pregnant?

Some women experience that they feel when they become pregnant, that is, when the sperm meets the egg, says Jane Fogelström.

- And it's early. It's the same day, or the day after, you have had intercourse - and it has actually happened to me.

Jane Fogelström was only 16 years old when it happened. She remembers it well.

- I had a gym and something felt different down in my stomach. It was like a sensation, a vague feeling that something was happening in the womb.

Every now and then, at the moment, she did not understand what it was.

- But when the period did not come, I understood what it was I had experienced two weeks earlier. And as a midwife, I have heard many say that they have felt that "there it took" - but you may not tell anyone until you have done a test and know you are pregnant.

Jane Fogelström's first pregnancy led to an abortion. Since then, she has been pregnant twice more. Then she did not experience the same thing.

- The second time, the pregnancy was not discovered until week 16, because I did not have any pregnancy symptoms. So I think it can be very different - not only between different women but also between different pregnancies, in one and the same woman.

Difficult to understand early pregnancy signs

Early signs of pregnancy are difficult to understand and interpret, says Jane Fogelström.

- Because the symptoms are the same as those some people feel before menstruation, ie even when you are not pregnant. Then you can feel a little tension in the breasts, or feel that the breasts get a little bigger, harder and more sensitive, you can get a little pain in the uterus, get a little irritated… These are exactly the same symptoms that can be a sign of pregnancy, so it is difficult to know what it's about.

- And you can get a miscarriage even if a pregnancy test showed positive long before menstruation is expected to come. It is not uncommon for miscarriages that are so early that you do not even notice them , or miscarriages that you only experience as a delayed period. There are several conditions that must be right for it to be a lasting pregnancy, says Jane Fogelström.
