Pregnancy test

A pregnancy test can provide a quick and safe answer about pregnancy. You can go to a youth clinic and do the test, or you can buy and do it yourself. It is possible to test approximately at the time when the period should have come.

Where can I take the test?

You can do a pregnancy test at a youth clinic, midwife clinic or health center. It usually costs nothing there.

You can also buy pregnancy tests at a pharmacy, in many grocery stores or on the internet.

All pregnancy tests measure a hormone that is formed in the body when you have become pregnant . The level of the hormone is measured in your kiss. The tests at receptions and the tests you do yourself at home are just as safe.

At some clinics you need to make an appointment for the visit, others have drop-in times when it is possible to submit urine samples for pregnancy tests. You can go to any reception you want throughout Sweden.

It is good to do the test at a reception, because you can talk to a midwife right there.

  • If you are pregnant and are unsure if you want to continue the pregnancy, you can talk to the midwife about your thoughts.
  • If you are pregnant and want to continue the pregnancy, the midwife tells you what you need to do to, for example, book an appointment with the maternity ward.
  • If you are pregnant and want to have an abortion, the midwife can tell you how it works. Hen can also help you get in touch with an abortion clinic.
  • If you are not pregnant, you can talk to the midwife about protection against pregnancy  so you do not risk getting pregnant the next time you have vaginal intercourse.
  • If you are not pregnant but trying to become one, you can talk to the midwife about what you can do to increase the possibility of it.

When can it be tested?

There are different types of pregnancy tests. With most people, you can find out if you are pregnant around the time you should have your period.

Do you have irregular periods or do you not know when you would have had your period? Then you can do a pregnancy test three weeks after the time you think you may have become pregnant.

Do a new test after about a week even if the test showed that you are not pregnant but you think you can still be. For example, because you have not had your period or have other signs of pregnancy .

These are the same times that apply if you go to a clinic to do a pregnancy test. That is, it is possible to test when you should have had your period.

There are pregnancy tests that you can do earlier than when you would have menstruated. On the packaging you can read more about what applies to the particular test you use.

Acute methods

You can prevent a pregnancy in two ways if you have had unprotected sex but do not want to get pregnant. Either by inserting a copper coil . You can get this at, for example, a youth clinic. Or you can take an  emergency contraceptive pill . You can also get it at a youth clinic or buy it yourself at a pharmacy.

Contact a youth clinic as soon as possible. Copper coil must be inserted within five days after unprotected intercourse. There are two types of emergency contraceptive pill that should also be taken within the next 24 hours after intercourse.

Pregnancy tests measure a particular hormone in the pussy

There are many different pregnancy tests. They may work and look a little different, but all tests are usually in the form of a stick. They have a part that will suck up kisses to be able to measure the pregnancy hormone in the body.

You can pee in a mug and dip the stick in the pee, or hold the stick and pee on it immediately.

When do I get an answer?

The answer to the test usually comes after a few minutes.

Some tests indicate a pregnancy by forming a line next to a control line. There are also digital tests that show the result with a symbol or text.

You will be helped to interpret the results if you take the test at a youth clinic or another clinic. If you do the test at home, read the instructions for use on how to do it and how to interpret the result.

How reliable is the test?

A pregnancy test is very safe if you have followed the instructions in the instructions for use. You can trust the test if it shows that you are pregnant. However, if you have been pregnant and had a miscarriage or had an abortion, the hormone level can be high for up to a month afterwards.

The tests that you buy yourself and the tests that you do at a reception give equally reliable results.

What happens after the test?

Some people who do pregnancy tests do not think much before they do the test. Some people think and feel a lot depending on what they want the test to show. It is common with many different emotions when the result comes. You may feel joy, relief, confusion, sadness or nothing special. Sometimes emotions change.
